FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Orcas Island group to build World Class Skate Park Eastsound, WA, May 22, 2002: – A group of Orcas Island, Washington residents have rallied together to build a world class skate park for local teens. The group has raised over half of the $150,000 required, and has started construction on the 15,000 square foot park.
Local contributors include ski legend Warren Miller, Hobie Alter, inventor of the Hobie Cat, and Mike Brown, former Microsoft CFO. “…this park is being built for that overlooked seven to seventeen year old who is not interested in playing organized sports because they are more interested in their pursuit of individual freedom”, Miller said.
The park, designed by renowned skate construction firm Grindline, and partially funded by the Tony Hawk Foundation, is scheduled for completion by July 4 this year. This will be the 23rd park for Grindline, famous for their work on Burnside in Portland, OR, and a number of other Northwest skate parks. Grindline has been designing parks for over ten years. Paul Garwood, of Island Supply is the contractor on the job and has lent his valuable expertise to keep the project on schedule.
Orcas Island is a 57 square mile island in the San Juan Islands off the northwest coast of Washington State with a permanent population of just over 3500 year round residents.
