FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sports legends help Northwest island community build world class skate parkEASTSOUND, WA – This 57 square mile island in San Juan archipelagos will soon achieve world class status thanks to local residents, legendary ski filmmaker Warren Miller and Hobie Cat inventor Hobie Alter. Miller has pulled together local residents to raise funds and start construction on a skate park worthy of a “one of the best in the world” moniker. Former Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Mike Brown is also a big part of the project. The park, designed by renowned skate construction firm Grindline, and partially funded by the Tony Hawk Foundation, is scheduled for completion within a couple months. This will be the 23rd park for Grindline, famous for their work on Burnside in Portland, OR, and a number of other Northwest skate parks. Grindline has been designing parks for over ten years. The group has raised over half of the $150,000 required, and construction has already begun on the 15,000 square foot park. Orcas Island has just over 3500 year round residents, but the population grows dramatically in the summer months. The skate park will give both locals and tourists a place to exercise their freedom. “In a skateboard park, everyone is both a teacher and a pupil.”, Miller emphasized. “Today more American kids are skateboarding than are playing baseball. Don’t forget that in any Little League Baseball game, nine kids always lose right along with their eighteen parents. In a skateboard park however everyone always wins because there is no score.”, Miller said. “Skateboarders have really found freedom without buying a ski lift ticket.” For more information on the park, or to help with a donation, visit http://www.skateorcas.org
